STARFLEX Jelly Glues

All Natural, Protein-Based Adhesives

Jelly Glues are water-based adhesives whose essential ingredient is collagen, a natural polymer. Collagen proteins, derived from natural sources, are mixed with other safe ingredients including sugar, Epsom salts, glycerin, and water. A key ingredient in our jelly glues is gelatin produced as a by-product of the manufacturing processes of nationally known food and pharmaceutical companies.

2 Safety and Environmental Advantages

There is no other raw material like collagen protein used in the adhesive industry that fits so perfectly with current safety and environmental requirements.  For this reason, protein-based adhesives are making a comeback.  For the right applications, all-natural glues can displace resins, hot melts and other more sophisticated technology products.  STARFLEX Jelly Glues are water-based, non-hazardous and non-toxic. They are recyclable, repulpable, and biodegradable, and do not contaminate waste disposal areas.
Green Safety Characteristics:
  • Safe to Use - operating temperatures run approximately 50% less than hot melt.
  • Safe Vapors - harmless water moisture, with no solvents or volatile chemicals.
  • Safe for the Environment - spills can be handled as non-hazardous waste, and are not harmful to people or animals.
  • Safe Recycling - will re-dissolve and not corrupt recycling of paper and paperboard. This is different than hot melts and some resins, which may require removal prior to recycling in order to keep from contaminating the finished recycled product.
3 How Jelly Glue is Produced

When STARFLEX Jelly Glues are manufactured, they are in a liquid state at 150°F (65°C). After approval by quality control, STARFLEX products are filtered and allowed to cool to a solid form before they are wrapped and packaged. When reheated to 140° - 150°F (60°-65°C) the glue becomes liquid and sticky. STARFLEX formulas are available in a wide range of flexibilities, setting times, colors, aromas, and viscosities, allowing customization for a wide range of user applications.

Bonding with Jelly Glue

Generally STARFLEX Jelly Glue bonds surfaces which are water sensitive, such as paper, board, cloth, foam, backed vinyl fabrics, and the like. STARFLEX products are also available for more difficult-to-stick surfaces.

STARFLEX Jelly Glue is melted, preferably in a temperature-controlled, jacketed gluepot, or pre-melt tank, to 140°-150°F (60°-65°C). It may be used undiluted or diluted to your preferred viscosity with clean hot water. Hot STARFLEX Jelly Glue is applied to one of the surfaces to be bonded, and the surfaces are joined and compressed. The adhesive film cools and the bond forms. It can be applied by a wide range of highly sophisticated equipment; or it may be applied with standard bench type gluers, brushes, or rollers.

Why Use STARFLEX Jelly Glue?

STARFLEX Jelly Glues fit in perfectly with today’s environmental concerns and are safe to workers.  Because they require lower operating temperatures, they also save energy, money and cause no heat related industrial accidents. STARFLEX natural glues are water soluble, so clean-up is easy. They’re non-toxic, and biodegradable, so disposal of scrap material presents no environmental problems.

Easy to Use on the Manufacturing Floor

Natural glues’ lower melt point makes them easier to use in production. Hot melt adhesives set-up quickly, which can increase product loss when machine adjustments are needed. STARFLEX natural glues have a longer set-up and bonding time than hot melt adhesives. So during equipment adjustments the glue applied to work-in-process won’t set-up, reducing materials waste and keeping costs lower.

STARFLEX cleans up easily with hot water.  This makes it easy to keep melters and application machinery clean, and helps insure good adhesion and adhesive mileage. STARFLEX adhesives offer excellent adhesion permanence, and non-warp characteristics. These characteristics enable your products to handle better in the end user’s hands.
