RESINS (Synthetic Adhesives) Role in Manufacturing

Resins have long played a "silent" but indispensible role in packaging, book binding, graphic arts, carton and case sealing, cardboard lamination applications, envelopes, furniture, and product packaging.  While adhesives are generally the smallest part of any application, they are without a doubt one of the most important.  Having the right adhesive, with the right formulation, is the key difference between a usable, successful product, and a broad range of manufacturing and product performance problems.

Packaging, graphic and product designers are always coming up with new and different technologies to create, protect and advertise products. This requires versatility and adaptability in the use of existing adhesive formulas, and the development of custom formulations when needed. The combination of customer, equipment, machine operators’ skills and production requirements make for a highly variable set of needs for every application.

STARTEX Resins are based on Polyvinyl Acetate or Ethylene Vinyl Acetate and other specialty polymers and plasticizers. Olympic has established an ever developing adhesive product line, founded on technical creativity with proven in-house compounding technology.  STARTEX Resins are used in the laminating, corrugated, folding carton, book binding, furniture, textile coating, and packaging industries. These adhesives are manufactured in liquid form, and then shipped in 5 gallon pails, 30 or 55 gallon fiber packs, or 2500 lb. tote bins.

Olympic Can Custom Formulate a STARTEX Resin that conforms to:

  • Specific production methods
  • Equipment requirements or limitations
  • Required tack and setting times
  • Viscosity
  • Shear strength
  • Compatibility with other materials

When specifying the right adhesive, manufacturers need an adhesive supplier who is focused on creating solutions and solving application issues. Olympic delivers resins with the following performance characteristics:

  • Safety
  • Strength
  • Durability
  • Attractive and/or unobtrusive appearance
  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Efficient usage & clean up
  • Able to handle climatic conditions
  • Secure adhesion to paper, cardboard, corrugated board, wood, plastics, laminates and other surfaces
  • Clean machine operation
  • Consistent quality
  • High adhesion

Book Binding

Durability, strength and flexibility are key factors in the construction of a book, whether the application is 100 pages or 1500 pages.  Manufacturers need an economical adhesive solution that optimizes their production process and equipment to deliver the highest quality end result.  Olympic Adhesives works very closely with customers to custom formulate the right resin for each application.  Our resins are used in the following applications:

  • Backlining/Tightback
  • Casing In
  • Catalogs/Directories
  • Gluing Off
  • Joint/Side Glue
  • Stripping/Tipping/Inserts
  • Two-Shot Perfect and Case Binding - Cold

Hardcover books, in particular, need adhesives that ensure “long-life” and can handle variations in climate, handling or pull forces and binding materials. STARTEX Resins are designed to perfectly bond with all types of substrates.  We work closely with you to customize the solution to address your particular application and technical requirements.  We ensure that the adhesive maximizes performance by developing the formula best suited for the three key elements of any application:  substrate, binding equipment, and production process. Whether the application requires a small or large quantity of adhesive, easy process-ability is a major factor in fine-tuning your particular formulation.

As consumer demand drives increased changes in book binding and the resulting changes in technology (both adhesive and equipment), the adhesive industry must be flexible and ready to custom formulate highly specific resins.  An additional factor is the societal demand for more environmentally sustainable production and manufacturing methods – all of which impact and drive new and improved adhesive solutions.

Carton & Case Sealing

In carton and case applications, the factors of climate and other physical stressors are of primary importance.  Adhesives used in these types of products require being able to withstand and perform in a wide range of temperatures, from extremely high heat to freezing temperatures.  Packaging must also withstand extremes in handling, shipping, buffeting, storage and the like before the consumer opens the package.  Durability of the physical carton, as well as the graphic design on the package, relies on just the right adhesive formulated for the package’s specific environmental factors.  The variations present in different packaging machines are also a further requirement in specifying the right adhesive.  Cartons and cases can include a broad range of very customer specific requirements depending on the end use of the application.

While the economy is a factor in any industry, furniture as a more mature industry is subject to it in a much greater degree. The economic impact of unemployment and the resulting changes in commercial and residential real estate make for a complex set of challenges for furniture manufacturers.
In order to stay competitive, manufacturers need to increase production and process efficiencies, reduce costs and increase customer service. Other demands include increased calls for environmental and other safeguards – all leading to a requirement for high-performance adhesives that are flexible for different applications, backed up by superior customer support from industrial adhesive manufacturers.
Whatever the furniture application needed, Olympic’s STARTEX Resins are formulated to work with each application’s specific requirements and challenges. Typical applications include:

  • Edge bonding
  • Lamination
  • Upholstery
  • Assembly
  • Veneering
  • Inlays
  • Finishing

Today’s consumer and trade demands, combined with heightened guidelines for environmental, plant and product safety, demand an adhesive supplier that formulates solutions, not just provides adhesive products.  Furniture manufacturers turn to Olympic Adhesives to produce better products and improve production efficiencies.
